Turning the Tide Against Trash
Every year Pepco employees give back to the community by helping clean up the Anacostia River. Employees use rakes and shovels to fill industrial-strength trash bags with garbage found along the shoreline. Still, others go by boat and “fish” for tires, shopping carts and heavy items that sit along the river’s bottom.
“When you realize how much trash is in our rivers, it’s inspiring to know that you can make a difference,” said Colin Danville, Pepco’s Lead Engineer for Environment Management Services. “We have a lot of employees who return year after year to help with this cleanup effort.”
Pepco participates in three annual Anacostia River cleanups, including the spring cleanup in partnership with Capital River Relief. Pepco also sponsors a spring and fall cleanup of the Anacostia River near Pepco’s Benning Service Center in Washington, D.C.
School children and neighborhood and community groups help Pepco volunteers in the river cleanup effort.
