At Pepco, all electrical equipment upgrades - new power lines, substations and other equipment – are designed and constructed to ensure that our customers will receive the safe, reliable electric service that they have come to expect with minimal impact to the environment.
Every five years, Pepco invests hundred of millions of dollars in electrical reliability to ensure our system is meeting the growing need for power.
Pepco’s most recent equipment upgrade kept the environment at center stage. A new substation at the intersection of New York and Florida Avenues in Northeast Washington, D.C., features 48 solar panels, each of which can produce 210 watts, or roughly 10 kilowatts of power.
While that is not enough to supply all the power needs of the substation, it will definitely reduce the amount of conventional power it uses—and that equates to emissions reductions.
Another recent Pepco project enhanced the reliability of electric service to downtown Washington and the federal government. Pepco built two new high-voltage transmission lines, each carrying 230,000 volts. The lines were constructed over an 18-month period and completed in time to meet the summer 2007 peak demand period. Normally, a project of this type would require about four to five years for completion of the permitting approval process and construction.
